How can one defeat their ego?

I just watched the movie Revolver with Jason Statham. In it he defeats his ego, however his methods weren’t disclosed. I think this is an interesting idea.

Please provide detailed instructions if you know how to defeat one’s own ego.

i dont believe that one can defeat their own ego. your ego how you feel about yourself, high confidence the only way that your ego can be changed is if you change who you are. or if somthing in your life changes.

The ego is the part of ourselves that is linear, or our surface persona (mask). The ability to move beyond the ego is dependent upon our desire to grow in depth, both mentally and spiritually. You can not take ego out of the picture when you are focused only on what you see, hear, feel, and taste within our physical existence. A person must reflect within and have a desire to serve others that is unselfish in both origin and desired outcome. As we serve others our ego is not involved, so we are able to move beyond it.

When we are within our ego state of mind, it is like we have blinders on. We do not see the whole picture and therefore do not realize the complete truth.

I haven’t seen the movie and with a name like “Revolver” I probably won’t.

The ego or self exists because it is the process of your mind that protects you from harming yourself, or what you think might harm you. Sometimes the self gets confused and actually does things that can actually endanger you. And example is believing in something so strongly that you will die for it, and then die.

So you want to be careful about eliminating the ego. Not a wise practice.

That said, the creative process is beneath the ego’s control and the ego systematically censors the creative process if it feels that being creative is dangerous. Because of that most artists spend much of their lives figuring out how to do a work around the ego to tap into their creative impulses. Some are more successful than others and one method doesn’t work for everyone.

Now, most people can actually get to the creative impulses without your ego if you train yourself to be aware of your dreams. When you are asleep, you are aware but there is no ego there. That is why you can feel vulnerable in some bad dreams and defenseless. During the evolutionary development of the ego there was no need to have the ego around when you are asleep as you had a safe nest to hide in that the ego created when you were awake. So there is no ego in your dreams. But when you awake you have to have the ego to protect yourself from doing stupid things.

You can also get to the egoless state by meditation, although what you are really doing is moving into a non-threatening dream like state. The key here is non-threatening. You have to realize that no matter what happens it is OK and you are safe. That is very hard to do.

Transcending the defensive ego is a serious life process of gaining self knowledge and overcoming your childish survival routines. Because the field of reality – in which we are embedded – is responsive to consciousness it mirrors the conflicts between ego beliefs and your authentic needs/essential nature. This is NOT a pretty picture.

    1. The ego is the conditioned identity which is comprised of the early beliefs you learn about self and the world (I am safe/unsafe, people can/can’t be trusted, etc. etc.) primarily before the age of seven, before the massive thinking brain comes on-line making you capable of examining what is happening around you.

    2. These beliefs are primarily stored in the subconscious which makes them difficult to discern, but they control perception, feelings, thoughts and reactions, so you can see how dangerous the ego can be.

    3. Whatever consistent patterns you are exposed to in childhood will thereafter repeat in your experience until you pull the ego beliefs out by the roots, which requires going back to the origin/source of the belief and reframing it completely. (Exp., if you believe you are worthless, or undeserving of love, this will occur in experience until you REVERSE it at the source of the memory. These are usually ‘emotionally intense defining moments.”)

    3. We are all here to experience “full aliveness” which is unique to each person, and our experience of reality offers the only failsafe method for achieving this permanent ego-less state. Observe the patterns of experience that you do not like and ask “What would I have to believe to be experiencing this?” Contemplate when you first felt this way and examine the memory in the light of adult reason until you are able to change your mind. This can take moments or years depending upon how consistently negative your early experiences were and how complex your defensive system became. And, remember that the body’s electrochemistry (emotional imprints) is as tenacious as the belief system to dislodge but it offers clues to hidden beliefs so it is necessary to become the observer/witness of the internal and external experience.

    4. When you have defeated the ego, reality will have conformed to your authentic Self, your passions and purpose. It is worth the effort and an interesting process.

I think in that sense you do the unexpected thing that most people and especially your enemies would be surprised about when you did it. By doing so that act of arrogance and ego is eliminated deliberately in order to maintain survival. It would be a temporary act that can cause a lifetime remedy. It’s no different than a chameleon that can change it’s color in order to hide from it’s enemy and escape with it’s life.
