You often need a Ph.D. if you want to teach at college level or do research. If you want to use your education and training as a therapist/counselor or other clinician, you may be able to do it with a Masters Degree. The school that I attended, U. of No. Texas, has a number of departments that train people to do a variety of clinical jobs, for example: clinical psychologist (mostly testing) which requires a doctoral degree; school or agency counselor (therapist) which requires a masters degree. I would recommend that you talk to the school counseling department at your university or college to fill you in on the ins and outs of psychology disciplines. It’s mainly split between research, education/teaching, and clinical application in a number of areas.
