Just layers of one's personality, interwoven, and the being caught up inextricably, since unwinding one layer hurts deeply the other one's fabric !

I see it as our internal emotional development..When we are infants we had the id "the I want" and we believe the world to be centred about us only..then later on we started seeing ourselves amongst other we still have our "I want id" but we also learn to contribute and share and have "relationship" we develop a full ego ...Then we may or may not have insight into things other than our ego that may lead the ego to "altruistic qualities" or "place" this is super ego..

The Id is all of our basic primitive needs, our unconscious desires. The ego, which realizes those needs, acts as a mediator to the superego, which incorporates moral responsibility.
